Where is Calascio?

Calascio is in the region of Abruzzo located in south-central Italy and Abruzzo is east of Rome. It’s primarily a mountainous region with a rocky landscape, grassy plains, majestic pine trees and also, there are miles of sandy beaches, depending on which province in the Abruzzo region you visit. The village of Calascio is located in the Province of L'Aquila.

How do I get to Calascio?

A typical route to Calascio starts from Rome. While you have a choice of two bus services from Rome to the Province of L’Aquila, Gaspari bus service departs directly from Rome's Fiumicino Airport (a.k.a. Leonardo da Vinci Airport). This link will take you to the Gaspari website. Tickets are about 16 Euros each way and the pick-up point for their bus is outside Fiumicino Terminal 3. The Gaspari drop-off point in L'Aquila is Hotel Amiternum. From the hotel, you'll need to use local bus service to reach Calascio or arrange for private transportation to take you to Calascio.

Alternatively, the TUA bus from Rome Tiburtina Station (in downtown Rome) takes you to L'Aquila's Collemaggio bus terminal. From Collemaggio, you can take a local bus to Calascio or arrange for private transportation. Driving to Calascio

The fastest way to reach Calascio is to rent a car in Rome or in L’Aquila and drive to the village. From Rome, you'll drive on the A24 Toll Road heading east to L’Aquila. Upon nearing L’Aquila, go past the L'Aquila Ovest (West) exit and continue on the A24 to the L'Aquila Est (East) exit. Take the East exit onto State Highway SS17. You'll pass the villages of Bazzano and Poggio Picenze before reaching your turn-off to the left at the junction taking you to the town of Barisciano. You will see stacked road signs (similar to ones on this page) indicating the direction of Calascio. After turning towards the village of Barisciano, you climb a scenic mountain road and eventually pass through the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, prior to arriving at Calascio. Approximate travel time is 20 minutes to Calascio from the Barisciano turn-off on SS17.

Alternatively, you can reach Calascio from the Adriatic Coast by taking the A24 motorway southwest to the SS17. Here are the map links:
